Wisdom Teeth (Third Molars)

Wisdom teeth occasionally appear in the mouth in their correct positions. Almost always, though, they don’t. When the jaw isn't large enough to accommodate them, they can become impacted (unable to come in). Wisdom teeth may grow sideways, emerge only part way from the gum or remain trapped beneath the gum and bone.

Extraction of wisdom teeth is generally recommended when they are partially erupted and cannot move further. This situation leaves a large pocket between the gums and the tooth that will become repeatedly infected causing pain, swelling, jaw stiffness and possibly more serious illness. Sometimes their removal is recommended simply because they can’t be restored properly when they get a cavity. Nearly always, they are difficult to brush and keep clean and their removal will keep the molars in front of them healthier.
